The short version
- You must be 18 or older to use Knowist.
- Paid plans renew automatically until you cancel. If your plan starts with a free trial, you’re charged when the trial ends unless you cancel first.
- You can cancel anytime in the app under Manage subscription. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for.

1. Agreement to these terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Knowist LLC (“Knowist”, “we”, “us”). They govern your use of the Knowist website at knowist.app, the Knowist web app, and any related services (together, the “Service”).
By creating an account, starting a free trial, buying a subscription, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your personal information. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.
2. Who can use Knowist
You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live if that is higher, and able to form a binding contract. The Service is not directed to children, and we don’t knowingly allow anyone under 18 to create an account. You may not use the Service if you are barred from doing so under applicable law.
3. Your account
You create an account with your email address. There is no password: we sign you in by emailing you a one-time link or code. Because anyone with access to your email inbox can sign in to your account, you are responsible for keeping your email account secure and for activity that happens under your Knowist account.
Please give us an email address you control and keep it up to date, since we use it to sign you in and to send receipts and important notices about your subscription. Tell us promptly if you believe someone has accessed your account without permission.
Some parts of the Service work before you create an account. Progress made before you sign in is kept in your browser and may be lost if you clear your browser data.
4. The service and its content
Knowist offers book companions: original, chapter-by-chapter summaries and commentary on nonfiction books, with narration, reading modes, chapter checks, practice reminders and a personalised learning path.
- Companions aren’t the books. Each companion is our own work about a book. It isn’t a substitute for the book, isn’t written or endorsed by the book’s author or publisher, and Knowist isn’t affiliated with them unless we say so. Book titles and author names are used only to identify the works we discuss.
- Not professional advice. Companions cover topics such as investing, money, business, health, psychology and relationships. They are for general education only and are not financial, investment, legal, medical, psychological or other professional advice. Talk to a qualified professional before acting on anything you read.
- Accuracy. We work to make companions accurate and fair to the original books, but they are condensed interpretations and may contain mistakes or omissions.
- Changes to the Service. We may add, change or remove books, features and content over time. If we remove something that is a material part of a paid plan, we will tell you and you may cancel.
- Reminders. Practice reminders are calendar files you add to your own calendar. We don’t guarantee that your calendar or device will deliver them.
5. Subscriptions, trials and billing
Plans and prices
Full access to the Service requires a paid subscription. The plans, prices, billing periods and any trial or introductory offer available to you are shown before you pay. Prices may vary by region and may include or exclude taxes as shown at checkout. You are responsible for any taxes that apply to your purchase.
Automatic renewal
Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, and we charge the payment method on file the then-current price for the next period, until you cancel. By subscribing, you authorise us and our payment processor to make these recurring charges.
Free trials
If your plan includes a free trial, you won’t be charged during the trial. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, your paid subscription starts automatically and we charge you the price shown when you started the trial. The trial length and the date of your first charge are shown before you start. Free trials are for new subscribers, and we may limit them to one per person.
Introductory offers
An introductory discount applies only to the payment described in the offer, usually your first payment. After that, your subscription renews at the full regular price shown with the offer. Offers may be time-limited and can’t be combined unless we say so.
Payments
Payments are processed by Stripe. We don’t receive or store your full card number. If a payment fails, we or Stripe may retry it, and we may suspend paid features until it succeeds. You can update your payment method under Manage subscription.
Price changes
We may change subscription prices. A price change applies to your subscription only from your next renewal after we notify you, and we will give you reasonable advance notice by email so you can cancel before it takes effect.
6. Cancellation
You can cancel at any time. Open Knowist, choose Manage subscription, and cancel in the subscription portal. You can also ask us to cancel for you using the contact details below.
- Cancelling stops future renewals. You keep access until the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for, and your subscription then ends.
- If you cancel during a free trial, you won’t be charged. Your access may end when you cancel or when the trial period ends.
- Deleting the app from your home screen, clearing your browser, or simply not using Knowist does not cancel your subscription.
7. Refunds
If a money-back guarantee was shown to you when you bought your subscription, you can get a refund under the terms of that guarantee, as described in the Money-Back Policy shown with it.
Otherwise, payments are non-refundable and we don’t provide refunds or credits for partial billing periods or unused time, except where required by law or where we decide to make an exception.
Nothing in these Terms limits any right you have under the consumer protection laws where you live, including any statutory right to withdraw from or cancel a purchase. If you are in a country that gives consumers a right of withdrawal for digital services, you may exercise it by contacting us within the period the law allows; where the law permits, we may reduce your refund in proportion to the part of the period you have already used.
8. Acceptable use
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service and its content for your own non-commercial learning while your account is in good standing. You agree not to:
- copy, download, scrape, record, redistribute, sell, publish or publicly display companions, narration or other content, except for brief quotes for personal, non-commercial use;
- share your account or sign-in links with others, or resell access to the Service;
- use bots, crawlers or other automated means to access the Service or collect its content, including to train machine-learning or AI models;
- reverse engineer, interfere with, or try to get around security or access controls in the Service, except where the law expressly allows it;
- use the Service to break the law or infringe anyone’s rights; or
- misuse free trials or promotions, for example by creating multiple accounts.
9. Intellectual property
The Service and its content, including companions, narration, illustrations, design, software and the Knowist name and logo, are owned by Knowist or its licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark and other laws. Except for the licence in section 8, these Terms don’t give you any rights in them.
Your answers, notes and reflections remain yours. You give us permission to store and process them to run the Service for you.
If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them without any obligation to you.
If you believe content on Knowist infringes your copyright, contact us with a description of the work, where it appears on the Service, your contact details, and a statement that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner. We will review and respond to every notice.
10. Third-party services
The Service relies on third parties, for example Stripe for payments. Your use of those services may be subject to their own terms and privacy policies. We aren’t responsible for third-party services we don’t control, or for websites we link to.
11. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Service at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account as described in our Privacy Policy. If you have an active subscription, cancel it first so you aren’t charged again.
We may suspend or end your access if you materially breach these Terms, if we must do so to comply with the law, or if your use creates a risk for Knowist or other users. Where reasonable we will tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. If we end your access without cause, or because we stop offering the Service, we will refund the unused part of any prepaid subscription period.
Sections 7, 9 and 12 through 17 survive the end of these Terms.
12. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. We don’t promise that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, that content will be complete or accurate, or that using Knowist will produce any particular learning or other result. We disclaim all implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain warranties to be excluded, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Knowist and its owners, employees and suppliers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms, even if we were told such damages were possible.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, and (b) US$50.
These limits don’t apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud, gross negligence, wilful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence. If you live in the EU or UK, we are liable under statutory provisions for intent and gross negligence, and nothing in these Terms limits your statutory rights as a consumer.
14. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold Knowist harmless from claims, losses and reasonable costs (including legal fees) brought by third parties that arise from your breach of these Terms or your misuse of the Service. This section doesn’t apply to consumers where the law doesn’t allow it.
15. Governing law and disputes
If you have a concern, please contact us first. Most problems can be solved quickly that way, and we ask that you give us 30 days to try to resolve a dispute informally before starting formal proceedings.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, and applicable US federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Subject to the next paragraph, any dispute that isn’t resolved informally will be decided exclusively by the state or federal courts located in Delaware, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring an individual claim in a small-claims court that has jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer living outside the United States, you also benefit from any mandatory protections of the law of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings in the courts where you live. EU consumers can also use the European Commission’s online dispute resolution information.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms from time to time, for example when we add features or when the law changes. We will post the new version on this page and update the date at the top. If a change materially affects your rights or your subscription, we will notify you by email or in the app at least 14 days before it takes effect. If you keep using the Service after the change takes effect, the updated Terms apply; if you don’t agree, you can cancel before then.
17. General
- These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any offer or Money-Back Policy shown at purchase, are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service.
- If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
- If we don’t enforce a provision right away, we haven’t waived our right to do so later.
- You may not transfer your rights under these Terms. We may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, as long as your rights under these Terms are not reduced.
- We aren’t responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- We may send you notices by email to the address on your account or in the app. You can send notices to us using the contact details below.
